Obituary

May L. Barone (nee Carter), 94, of Chestnut Ridge, NY, formerly of Dumont, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2026.

May was born in Englewood, NJ to the late Mary and James Carter.

May was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alfred J. Barone, in 1999, and her beloved daughter, Diane B. Morrissey, in 2022.

She was the loving mother of Donna Connelly and the late Diane B. Morrissey; mother-in-law to Wayne Morrissey; cherished grandmother to Jessica Wright (Justin), Amanda Costigan (Daniel), Kristen Reading, and Matthew Connelly; and beloved great-grandmother to Dylan, Jaxon, Jamison, and Ariana.

May married the love of her life, Al, in 1951. Their love story began all the way back in fifth grade and grew into a beautiful, lifelong love that was truly inspiring to everyone who knew them. We find comfort knowing that they are together again. Their two beautiful daughters, Diane and Donna, completed their family.

May was a devoted homemaker and later worked as a chocolatier at Kinchley’s in Tenafly. Her family fondly remembers the chocolate candies and sweet treats she would bring home. Later in life, May took great pride in becoming a foster grandparent through the Head Start school program, where she continued to share her love for children and formed special bonds with the kids and her coworkers. She continued in this role until she was 90 years old.

May found joy in the simple things she loved: collecting bells, sewing beautiful Christmas ornaments that now hang proudly on the trees of her family, doing puzzles, watching the Yankees and recapping the games with her great son-in-law, listening to Elvis and Tony Bennett, Curtis Sliva, listening to sports games/news on her radio and enjoying her beloved mozzarella sticks. Tony Bennett’s “Because of You,” her wedding song, will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Above all, May adored her family. She cherished her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, and great sons-in-law beyond measure. She also treasured time spent with her friends and neighbors.

May had an incredible way of making everyone feel remembered and cared for. She never forgot a birthday, an important event, an achievement, a doctor’s appointment, or anything happening in the lives of those she loved. She always checked in, always remembered, and could be counted on for a sweet holiday card accompanied by a special treat.

Her love was constant, reassuring, and unwavering. She is leaving behind a lifetime of beautiful memories and a lasting imprint on all of our hearts.

We will miss her deeply, but we will carry her love with us always. May’s memory will live on through her family, the traditions she created, the ornaments she lovingly made, the stories we share, and the countless ways she touched our lives.

Rest peacefully, Mom/Gram. You are loved beyond words, and you will continue to live on through all of us.

All services were private and under the care of Frech-McKnight funeral home, Dumont, NJ.
