Julia “Judy” M. Holtje (nee Dempsey) 75, of Dumont NJ, formerly of Leonia, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her sister, Eileen Panarotto and her grandson, Michael Grimes, her stepdaughter Danielle Peschler, her step-grandson Hunter Peschler and her step-granddaughter Morgan Duffy, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law. Predeceased by her husband, Ned R. Holtje and her son, Michael P. Grimes. Also, predeceased by her dear siblings Margaret Dempsey, Robert Dempsey, Joan Simunovich and Mary McSpirit.
Judy was born in Jersey City, NJ at Margaret Hague Hospital to Julia (nee Ahearn) and Anthony Dempsey. Judy graduated from Weehawken High School, and was employed as a customer service representative for over twenty years in the shipping department of Delta Corrugated, Palisades Park, NJ.
Judy was vibrant, easygoing and brought warmth and an adventurous spirit to everyone she met. She found true joy in life’s simple pleasures. You could often find her on her back deck, enjoying a quiet morning with a hot cup of coffee or tea, a cigarette, and listening to her oldies music.
An exceptional swimmer in her heydays, Judy loved spending time at the beach and sitting by the shore. She also had a wonderful sense of fun and adventure, always looking forward to her trips to Atlantic City and never hesitating to try something new. Judy also enjoyed playing games on her computer, even during the night.
Above all, Judy was a fiercely devoted mother to her only child, Michael. Though Michael sadly passed away eleven years ago, her love for him never wavered, and her family takes comfort in knowing they are reunited.
Judy’s friendly demeanor and joyful spirit leave a lasting mark on the hearts of all who knew her. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. The song has ended, but her beautiful melody lingers on forever.
A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue, Dumont. The Funeral Mass will be offered Friday, September 25, 2026, 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s R.C. Church , 280 Washington Avenue, Dumont. Judy will be laid to rest near her son, Michael P. Grimes at George Washington Memorial Park , Century and Paramus Roads, Paramus.
