Obituary

Thankamma A. Madampil was born on November 12th, 1941 at Perumannoor House, Parippu, Kerala, India. She is the sixth of eight children born to ltty andSossamma lpe.

Thankamma’s studies took her to Rajasthan, new Delhi and eventually Jordan. She spent the next 25 years applying her knowledge, expertise, and care working asa nurse at both Manhattan Psychiatric Center and at the Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York.

Thankamma was married to Alexander M. Madampil on August 15th, 1971. They shared 45 wonderful years together. They were blessed with three sons; Mathew, Abraham, and Alexander Jr.

Thankamma was the first of the Madampil family to immigrate to the United States in 1978, setting the stage for the rest of the family moving to the U.S. in 1979 – their first residence being in Brooklyn, NY, then Manhattan, NY, eventually residing permanently in Teaneck, NJ.

Thankamma was a devout Christian, holding steadfast and strong in her faith andbelief in God. She was an active member of various churches; beginning with St.Mary’s in Manhattan, on to St. Mary’s in White Plains, St. Stephen’s in Bergenfield, St. George’s in Teaneck, and most recently with St.Mary’s Orthodox Church Valley Cottage in Rockland County, NY.

Thankamma will always be remembered for being thoughtful, kind, and generous throughout her life; always giving to others without any regard for something in return. Her beautiful smile and friendly presence provided safety for everyone to speak freely without concern of any judgement. Her life was driven by her strong faith in Godandher forgiving heart. Family always came first, whether the ones here in the U.S. or those in India. The joy and happiness she brought to everyone will never be forgotten.

Thankamma is survived by her son Mathew Madampil and daugther-in-law Sophie Madampil, son Abraham Madampil, son Alexander Madampil Jr. and daugther-in-law Priya Madampil, and grandchildren; Maeleena, Tristan, Amelie, Eliana, Lila, and Ayla Madampil.

Visitation Friday, September 18, 2026, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue, Dumont. Funeral Service at the funeral home Saturday, September 19, 2026, 10:00 AM. Interment Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa.
