Obituary

Jonathan “Hughie” Cohen passed away on May 19th surrounded by his family. Born in Montreal, he came to the United States in 1971. His most important dream in life was to create his own family and make a success of that. He was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother.

Hughie worked in the restaurant business for many years, but his true career callings were with his Grant Street work family, his buddies on the River Vale Country Club team of rangers, and at the Englewood Field Club where he coached ice hockey with his son Dan for 17 years. He felt lucky to watch the children learn and grow, not just as hockey players, but as people as well. The lessons he taught on the rink carried on as life lessons outside the rink. He had more fun at his retirement jobs than anyone we know possibly could. Trips out west to the National Parks, Florida, and California rounded out a well lived life and retirement.

He was one of the founding members of the Dumont Roller Hockey League, a soccer and T-ball coach. He ran the annual Ridgewood Fall Motorcycle Classic which raised funds for Tomorrows Children’s Fund at Hackensack University Hospital. He will be remembered for attending all of his sons’ games and coming home and cooking a fabulous dinner. His culinary skills were unmatched and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Cathy, his sons Daniel (Amanda) and Matthew, and his adored granddaughter Ruby Jo to whom he was a beloved Papa.
He is also survived by his mother Vivian and stepmother Mary, sisters Ann (Rob) and Elissa (Jay), sister-in-law and brother-in-law Debbie and Rich, and brother-in-law Dave.
He was the “fun” uncle to nieces and nephews Scott (Jene), Kevin (Lynn), Benn (Brittany), Nina (Scott), Rachel (Nikki), and Aaron (Sabrina). He was a great uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Morty, stepfather Jules, and sister Margot.

Visitation gathering will be held at the Englewood Field Club, 341 Engle St., Englewood, NJ on Saturday, June 29th from 10:30am to 1pm. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund, 30 Prospect Ave, Hackensack NJ 07601, or Heel the Soul at Englewood Health, c/o Englewood Health Foundation, 350 Engle St., Englewood, NJ 07631.
