Anna Marie (Schweizer) O’Neill, 90, of Dumont, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2022. Incredibly proud of her German and Swiss heritage, she was born and raised in New York City by her dear parents, John and Anna (Schuster) Schweizer.
Anna Marie was a graduate of Guardian Angel Grammar School, Washington Irving High School and proudly earned her Associates Degree from Bergen Community College.
Anna Marie began her career as an administrative assistant for AT&T, but left the city after a few years for Dumont, where she raised her two sons. She was an insurance administrator for many years, working for the VIP Agency, Minet Insurance and finally, Post & Kurtz – a firm for which she worked alongside people who would become her friends for life.
Our mom absolutely adored Shirley Temple and found an early passion with the Brooklyn Dodgers and ice skating, all three of which lasted throughout her lifetime. She would actually go to batting practice before Dodger games at Ebbet’s Field and grab foul balls, then have them autographed by the likes of PeeWee Reese, Duke Snyder and Jackie Robinson. Her knowledge of those Bums and Sonja Henie was second to none. She was an excellent bowler, with a high game of 278, only giving up the sport to focus on raising her sons. Her love of sports was beyond compare and she was an ever present and spirited fan at her sons and grandchildren’s events – none were missed. Her travels to Switzerland and Germany, where many relatives remain, were highlights of her life.
If you’re not fortunate enough to own one, it’s almost hard to describe the intricacy and beauty of her work, but our Mom was known to so many for her knitting skills – a masterful artisan, simply without peer. The thousands of hats, scarves, sweaters, and blankets she created are heirlooms that will live on for generations in our family and those of our friends.
She was a sixty year Notary Public and a proud officer of the American Bowling Congress, Dumont Republican Club and The Bavarians of New Jersey.
Mom is predeceased by her best friend and beloved twin sister, Rose Marie, and her loving companion, Edwin Orr, both in 2020. She is survived by her sons, Stephen (Elaine) and Jamie (Joan Marie), grandchildren Kristin (Neil), Andrew (Chanel), Colleen (Alex), Megan, Erin and Kyle, along with great grandchildren, Claire, Lucas, Owen and Raelynn. Never to be forgotten are her niece Rosanne and nephew Robert, plus many great nieces and nephews.
A visitation service will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, in Haworth, NJ – with a funeral mass to follow at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org or call 888-845-7776 – memorial id #23023034.
