Gerard S. Merson, 70, of Dumont, NJ died June 5, 2022. Beloved husband of the late Carol (née Bentley) 2005. Loving son of the late Margaret and William Merson of Dumont. Dear brother of the late Msgr. Thomas Spenser Merson of San Francisco and William Merson and his wife Jacqueline of Wyckoff. Loving uncle of Christine. Devoted friend of Troy May.
Gerard was a man of great personal warmth and generosity with an engaging personality that endeared him to family and friends who shared in the joys of his life.
Gerard was born in Baltimore, MD in 1952, and was raised both there and St. Louis, MO before moving to Dumont in 1964. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s School, Dumont Class of 1966, Bergen Catholic High School, Class of 1970, and Manhattan College, New York City, Class of 1974. He was a talented athlete who excelled in track and field, and boxing. Gerard and Carol were passionate about their shared love of SCUBA diving, which they particularly enjoyed at various locations in the Caribbean and Hawaii.
After serving in the military during the Vietnam War, he enjoyed a long career in the food service industry, managing a series of prominent restaurants in New York City. His tireless work ethic, demanding but always fair management style, and compelling inner dignity won him many sincere and lasting friendships among customers and colleagues alike.
A private memorial service will be held by the family at a future date.
