Walter R. “Butch” Johnston, 83, of Dumont, died on July 19, 2021. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet L. (née Harz) 2018. Devoted father of Robert (Nancy), Michael (Christina), and Cheryl Downing (Dan). Cherished grandfather of Kaitlyn, Megan, and Jaclyn Johnston, Briana, Carl and Luke Johnston, Janet and Janine Downing.
Born in Astoria, Queens to Elsie (née Kneuer) and Walter Johnston, a retired Lieutenant (2000) with the Dumont Police Department for 37 years, a member of PBA Local #83. He became an auto mechanic at the age of 17, and was an avid collector of cars, including numerous antique cars. He enjoyed going to car shows where he loved being with many longtime friends. Butch enjoyed camping, golfing, photography, and spending winters in Jensen Beach with many close friends. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends in Dumont and LBI.
Funeral Service Friday, July 23rd, 10 AM, at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave., Dumont. Interment George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Visiting Thursday, July 22nd, 3-7 PM at the funeral home.
