George K. Mavropoulos, 72, of Dumont, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2020. He was born on April 19, 1948 in Greece. After growing up and serving Military duty in Greece, he eventually traveled the world as a Chef before settling in America. Continuing his work in the food industry, he and his (now late) wife and were married on July 15, 1984. He was always a hardworking and devoted family man, generous to anyone who needed help whether they asked or not. He could frequently be seen helping out in the church kitchen or at the many Greek festivals around the area. He lived for his family, often sacrificing for their well-being. Nick-named the “Hurricane” by many who knew him at his parish St. Anthony’s, excitement usually followed in his presence.
Besides cooking and being with his family, he had strong interests in the game of soccer, playing semi-pro in Greece, enjoyed a good game of poker or backgammon, or playing with the family dog Bailey. He is survived by his two children Konstantinos and Maria, his grandsons Matthew and Miles, as well as a large extended family in Greece including four sisters and a brother.
For those wishing to express their condolences, donations may be made in George’s memory to St. Anthony Orthodox Church, 385 Ivy Lane, Bergenfield, NJ 07621.
