Obituary

W. Barry Smithuysen, age 82, of Dumont NJ passed away on October 14, 2020. Beloved husband of the late Rita (nee Aub). Devoted father of Rick (Meg) Smithuysen and loving grandfather of Taylor, father of Cindy (nee Smithuysen) (Bart) Piccirillo, and Bill (Lorraine) Smithuysen, grandfather of four grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Dear brother of Peter Smithuysen and his wife Sharon and their children. Barry worked for Schindler Haughton and Otis Elevators as an elevator/escalator constructor and foreman. Barry was active in his community and served as a councilman, police commissioner and youth football coach. While a student at Dumont High School he played football, basketball, track and baseball. Barry was very proud of the recognition he received for his football contributions to the Dumont Huskies, named First team – BCSL All League, All County, All State and Wigwam All American in 1955, and was a charter inductee of the DHS Sports Hall of Fame. Barry received a full college scholarship and went on to play football at the University of Iowa.

Those that knew Barry can tell you that he was a warm giving person who was always willing to lend a hand to anybody at any time and would always have a smile to greet you. What he enjoyed the most was sharing all his football stories from his proud playing days. Those of you reading this that knew him, I guarantee you heard and enjoyed many of them.
